With one of the largest supply chains in the industry and approximately 75 percent of this based in Asia Pacific, as outlined in our supply chain policy and code of conduct, HP is committed to raising the social and environmental standards of our suppliers. In particular, HP works hard to ensure our suppliers’ human rights standards and labour and environmental practices are the same, regardless of where they are located in the world.

Audit |
To this end, we regularly audit our suppliers for compliance with our code of conduct and in 2008 we audited 142 suppliers at 246 facilities.

Training |
We invest heavily in training our supply chain throughout Asia Pacific. In 2008 for example, HP launched a worker training program in China which addressed labour rights awareness training, establishment of a workers’ hotline and tailor-made training for the workers’ representative committee. Stakeholder engagement |
We work collaboratively with different stakeholders to raise the standards of our supply chain. In Thailand, HP organized a conference in 2009 ‘Harmonizing Working Environment in Electronics Industry’, working with other members of the Electronics Industry Code of Conduct (EICC), and International Drive Equipment Manufacturing Association. The event was aimed at promoting supply chain social and environmental performance to sub-tier suppliers. In India, HP facilitated the project hosted by Ask-Verite - ‘Building Social Compliance Institutions’ project, supported by US Department of State. It aims to improve the awareness of workplace standards and discuss the capability building solutions for the Indian IT Electronics Industry.

HP is the first company in the IT industry to disclose carbon emissions data of its largest suppliers and we are working to establish better standardization of tools and methodologies to facilitate consistent and reliable reporting among suppliers. |
