Stakeholder engagement is an integral part of our citizenship activities and contributes to business success. We strive to have effective engagement with our stakeholders in order to improve our understanding of issues, to recognize trends and opportunities while also strengthening our brand.
Reporting is a fundamental aspect of communication with our stakeholders. HP APJ has worked with CSR Asia (a leading provider of information, training, research and consultancy services on sustainable business practices in Asia) to assess our stakeholder relationships within China. This project enabled us to better understand the perceptions, concerns and priorities of our stakeholders.
HP and CSR Asia identified key stakeholders who participated in a two-part dialogue process involving one-to-one interviews and focus groups. Stakeholders were guaranteed anonymity allowing them to freely express their own opinions.
During the interviews and focus groups, stakeholders were asked their views on:
- HPs performance in terms of economic, environmental, supply chain and social investment issues;
- What they considered to be the most pressing environmental, supply chain and social issues for HP;
- How they would like to see HP respond to these issues.
In total 41 stakeholders took part in the interview and focus group process. Some of the findings of the stakeholder dialogue revealed that HP needs to be more efficient in communicating our citizenship efforts to the wider community. HP invests in a large number of community projects and these social projects are becoming increasingly important aspects to our reputation.
Feedback on HPs environmental responsibility was generally very positive, but we realise there is more work to do. The dialogue with our stakeholders in China provided valuable guidance and advice on how we can continue to improve our environmental responsibility.

Stakeholder engagement is not only an integral part of our business practices within the region, it is also paramount to our global citizenship. We incorporate stakeholder engagement into our core business strategy at a global level in order to gain valuable feedback on our citizenship activities which help us to improve our programs.
In 2006, HP global created a Stakeholder Advisory Council to provide strategic advice on our global citizenship work. The council, comprising of representatives from NGOs and senior HP managers from our business units, provides HP with advice on current and emerging corporate citizenship issues. This assists our understanding of business risks and leadership opportunities.
The guidance provided by the Stakeholder Advisory Council provides great benefits to our citizenship activities in the Asia Pacific & Japan region.
