Many HP employees in the APJ region contribute their time and money to help people in need. Our volunteering initiatives not only assist individuals who need our support, they also strengthen our reputation and relationships with local communities and other important stakeholders, and contribute to the improvement of employee morale and productivity.

The Community Service Club is HP India's employee volunteering organization that comprises thousands of employees who work to make a difference in the lives of underserved and disadvantaged people. Established in 2005, the Community Service Clubs initiatives now reach out across the country to a wide range of people and organisations.

The key objective of the Community Service Club is to bring a transformation to the underprivileged by connecting with them in an individual as well as a team capacity. At the core of the Club's philosophy is the notion of employee advocates of social issues, where HP employees determine what and where their contributions are directed.

HP India employees have demonstrated their social consciousness in three areas:
  • Evaluating requests from NGOs seeking monetary and non-monetary assistance, and assessing these requests through field trips
  • Making personal monetary contributions (for eg. sponsoring fruit distribution to children in government schools in the vicinity of Electronic City in Bangalore)
  • Providing contributions through volunteering personal time (for eg. mentoring scholarship students through the India Literacy Project)
HP India's Community Service Club members volunteering initiatives
HP volunteers formed a Theatre Club enabling them to connect with students from Bangalore's Shristi Special Academy — a non-profit organisation which focuses on the development, education, training and rehabilitation of mentally challenged and autistic children.

The HP volunteers scripted, directed and coached a play for autistic students to perform at the academy's annual day. The students, along with the HP volunteers, performed the play in front of fellow students, teachers and parents — showcasing the students vocational and fine arts abilities.

What first appeared to be a challenging feat for HP India's Community Service Club members, turned into a unique opportunity to connect, interact and act alongside children with special needs.
Entertainment for aged care residents
HP employees highlighted their care and support for elderly members of their community by organizing a fancy dress event at Bangalores Little Sisters of the Poor.

The group of 30 aged care residents gathered with HP employees to participate in the fancy dress competition which was kicked off with music and dancing.

The winners of the competition were dressed as a bride groom, fisher folk and the Queen of England and the evening ended in a toe tapping, hand clapping chorus led by the home's Sisters!
Computer training for Mumbai orphans
Thanks to the training efforts of 15 HP Community Service Club members, students from Seva Sadan orphanage in Mumbai are set for a brighter future. HP India's association with the all-girls orphanage began with a donation of computers, which led to the challenge of enabling the students to make greater use of the computers.

An MS Office training program was initiated by HP employees for a class of 21 students over a period of three months. To enhance the students learning, the HP team extended the training to the orphanage's teachers and their female family members.

At the end of three month training program, students participated in a capability test, with the top three students receiving a certificate for the successful completion in MS Office Foundation Course.
Special Day Celebration program
HP India's Community Service Club initiated a unique way to celebrate the birthday of its members while also sharing joy with those in need around them.

The program, Share your special day in a Special Way, Young Friends are just a furlong away, gives employees the opportunity to celebrate their birthday with government school students who attend a school within the vicinity of Bangalore's Electronic City.

As an example of the scheme, a HP India employee can donate money to buy sweets for all children in a particular school on the employee's birthday. The sweets are distributed by a co-ordinator from the Electronic City Industries Association (which oversees the school midday meal scheme). The HP India employee also has the opportunity to visit the school during the school lunch hour to help distribute sweets and interact with the children.
Enhancing children's English speaking abilities
Through discussions with Electronic City Industries Association Trust representatives and local government school principals, it became evident to HP's Community Service Club members that they could help school children prepare for a better future by assisting with their English learning.

To create a fun environment for learning, HP's Community Service Club held a screening of the movie Stuart Little for 30 students from Bangalore's Dodda Thogur School. Following the success of the movie screening and the willingness of the students to further their understanding of English, Community Service Club members established a Saturday animation workshop. Conducted by graphic artists from ANTS (Animation Training School), the two hour session taught children to draw English-speaking cartoon characters.

The workshop revealed many talented artists and was the foundation for an annual workshop to be held with some of the 2500 children from the 11 government schools surrounding Electronic City.

This initiative was also the inspiration for the Budding Artist program.
Budding Artist program
HP volunteers designed the Budding Artist event as a platform to identify artistically inclined youth who could be nurtured to build a career in commercial arts.

The HP team worked with Electronic City Industries Association Trust representatives and local government schools to create a drawing competition that would highlight the artistic talents of students. More than 1500 or 89% of students from local schools participated in the drawing competition and of these, 750 award winners were selected by a judging panel of Bangalore artists, animators and HP graphics team members.

These 750 students participated in an inter-school art competition and following this, 50 students attended a 45 day summer coaching camp conducted by art institution, Chitrakala Parishad.

Through the initiative of HP volunteers, the Budding Artist program has not only unleashed the creative talents of many students, it has also provided inspiration for exciting future careers.
