In October 2005, HP signed a sustainability partnership called Sustainability Compact, with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) NSW. The agreement is a first for HP worldwide and also for the NSW government.
The Compact is a 3-year voluntary agreement and emphasizes joint implementation of sustainability projects according to agreed upon targets and timelines. The compact promotes improved environmental practices in both government and industry. In addition to our commitment to advance the sustainability practices of our facilities, operations and our supply chain, we have committed to working with the Department of Environment and Conservation on several sustainability priorities including:
• sustainability planning and reporting
• stakeholder involvement
• product stewardship
• environmentally preferable IT purchasing
• enhanced environmental performance of HP sites and operations and;
• environmental auditing, staff education and training
“The IT industry needs to focus on taking back used products for re-cycling and to reduce its packaging. Thankfully Hewlett-Packard has taken up the challenge and has thrown down the gauntlet to the rest of the IT industry” New South Wales Environment Minister Bob Debus
As part of a joint commitment to sustainability leadership, DEC and HP also commit to advocating for broad improvement to the sustainability of the IT sector as a whole and supporting informed debate on range of sustainability issues.
